HLTAID015 prerequisites

You’ve done CPR on a real person and set up oxygen in a first aid room while the radio was still going. Now your Brisbane site, insurer or principal contractor wants proof your advanced resus ticket is current, and before you can book, you need to know the HLTAID015 prerequisites.

The full unit, HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy, has a shorter answer than most providers make it look. The unit has one formal prerequisite: HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. Everything else, from pre-course learning to your USI and photo ID, is a provider requirement, not part of the unit itself.

This guide is written for Brisbane ERT members, event first aiders and FIFO workers who already know the basics and want a straight answer before booking. You’ll see why HLTAID011 is the only unit-level rule, whether your current certificate counts, what to bring on course day, what your employer or client might add, how to plan it for a whole ERT, and how to keep the ticket current.

Sort it out once, book with confidence, and spend your course day on the oxygen and airways, not the paperwork.

What Are the HLTAID015 Prerequisites?

HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy has one formal prerequisite: HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. That requirement is written into the unit itself on training.gov.au, so it doesn’t come from any provider. Before you book, most Brisbane providers will also ask you to have the following:

1.
Provide a current HLTAID011 Statement of Attainment. Your training provider decides how recent it must be.
2.
Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). You need one for nationally recognised training.
3.
Bring valid photo ID to present on the day.
4.
Complete any required pre-course learning if your training provider uses it.
5.
Be prepared to perform uninterrupted CPR on a floor-level manikin during practical assessment.

If your employer, insurer or principal contractor has extra rules, check those separately. The list is short, and most people who already hold a current HLTAID011 can get through it in one sitting.

Why HLTAID011 Is the Only Formal HLTAID015 Prerequisite

What “prerequisite unit” means on training.gov.au

A prerequisite unit is one you have to hold before you can be assessed as competent in HLTAID015. It’s written into the unit itself. The provider running your course doesn’t get to add it or remove it. For HLTAID015, the only prerequisite unit listed is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. You can check that yourself in the HLTAID015 unit document on training.gov.au.

Unit requirements vs provider entry rules

Two different lists get mixed together here. The unit requires HLTAID011. The provider adds its own rules, such as how recent your certificate has to be, any eLearning, and your ID. A lot of course pages blend the two together, so people end up unsure which parts are actually mandatory. Once you keep them separate, booking is much simpler.

Why the order makes sense

HLTAID015 builds directly on your HLTAID011 skills. The unit elements cover life-threatening bleeding, single and two-rescuer CPR with oxygen, pulse oximetry, and making the environment safe for oxygen. All of that relies on a solid first aid base.

You already know the basics. This unit is about the equipment.

✅ Quick take: One unit-level prerequisite: HLTAID011. Everything else is provider policy.

Knowing the rules is one thing. The real question is whether the certificate in your wallet meets it.

Does Your Current First Aid Certificate Count?

A current HLTAID011

This one’s simple. If you hold a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, you meet the formal HLTAID015 prerequisites. The provider sets how recent that HLTAID011 needs to be, so confirm that rule before you book.

Pull out your Statement of Attainment or log into your USI transcript and check the issue date. Don’t rely on memory. Plenty of experienced first aiders find their ticket is older than they thought, because the years between renewals go by quickly when you’re busy running a site.

If you hold HLTAID014

HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid is a separate unit. What counts for HLTAID015 is whether you also hold a current HLTAID011 Statement of Attainment, so check your USI transcript for that specific unit code.

For more on the advanced first aid side, see our HLTAID014 guide.

Old HLTAID003 certificates

If your last first aid ticket was HLTAID003, it won’t get you in. Training.gov.au lists HLTAID011 as superseding HLTAID003, and the two are not equivalent. Plan to complete HLTAID011 before you enrol in HLTAID015.

Renewing from HLTAID007

Some long-time ERT members still have HLTAID007 Provide Advanced Resuscitation on file. HLTAID015 replaced it, but training.gov.au lists the two as not equivalent. Book it as a new enrolment rather than a straight renewal, and confirm your HLTAID011 is current first.

What You Need on HLTAID015 Course Day in Brisbane

Your USI

You need a Unique Student Identifier for any nationally recognised training. If you’ve done HLTAID011 before, you already have one, so look it up rather than creating a second one. Lost it? You can get it back at usi.gov.au. Your USI also links your results to your transcript, so contractor portals can verify your certificate without anyone having to chase paperwork.

Photo ID

Bring a photo ID to show on the day. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of thing that holds up a morning if it’s left in the ute.

Pre-course learning

If there’s pre-course learning, it should be relevant to the unit. It shouldn’t be a repeat of the CPR theory you’ve already covered several times. Getting it done before the day means more of your time in the room goes to the hands-on work.

Physical capacity

Be ready for uninterrupted CPR on a manikin on the floor. That comes from the unit’s performance evidence. If you’ve got a knee or back injury, give us a call before you book so we can talk it through.

What you’ll actually do on the day

This is the part most people care about. Expect hands-on time with:

  • Oxygen equipment set-up and delivery
  • Selecting and using airway adjuncts
  • Bag-valve-mask ventilation
  • Airway management using suction
  • AED use during advanced resuscitation
  • Practical skills training through realistic emergency scenarios

If you fumbled the regulator at a real job, this is where you fix it, on equipment you can actually set up yourself.

Your provider’s rules are only half the picture. Your site and your client may have their own.

Employer, Insurer and Client Requirements in Queensland

The Queensland first aid code of practice

Queensland’s first aid code of practice connects the equipment kept on your site to the training your first aiders need. If your first aid room holds oxygen and airway adjuncts, someone has to be trained to use them, and advanced resus training is usually how sites cover that. The details come from your site’s own risk assessment, so check it before you assume what’s required.

Event medical providers and FIFO site inductions

Event medical companies and mine site inductions often set stricter currency windows than the unit does. A ticket that’s fine on paper can still keep you off a roster or a swing. Check their rules before you’re rostered on, not the week of the event.

⚠️ Before you book: Check your contractor portal requirements to confirm which qualifications and evidence you need.

If you’re the one organising training for the whole team, the prerequisites multiply.

Planning HLTAID015 Prerequisites for a Whole ERT

Audit your team’s certificates first

When you’re booking for one person, it’s a single phone call. When you’re booking for an ERT, you’re working through a mix of expiry dates across HLTAID009, HLTAID011, HLTAID014 and HLTAID015, and those dates almost never line up. Before you book anyone into HLTAID015, check that every team member holds a current HLTAID011. If you skip that step, you can end up with someone turned away on course day and a gap in your coverage.

Onsite training at your Brisbane site

Sending your whole response team offsite at once leaves the facility uncovered, and no site manager will sign off on that. Onsite training on your site’s own equipment, run in split sessions, keeps people on the floor while the rest of the team trains.

Train your whole ERT onsite, on your own equipment.

📋 ERT planning tip: Mixed expiry dates across your Emergency Response Team (ERT)? Track every ticket in one sheet so you can monitor renewal dates and plan refresher training.

Meeting the prerequisites gets you in the door. Keeping the ticket current is the ongoing job.

Keeping HLTAID015 Current After You Enrol

How often to renew

HLTAID015 doesn’t set a renewal period of its own. The unit points you to your WHS regulator, and regular refreshers are the common industry expectation for advanced resuscitation skills.

Your employer, insurer or principal client might set their own window, so check their rules too. Theirs are the ones that decide whether you’re on the roster.

Skill fade between renewals

Equipment you only touch once a year becomes unfamiliar faster than you’d expect. Most experienced first aiders have had the moment where they’re at the cylinder, the regulator won’t seat properly, and the seconds feel much longer than they are. That skill fades. It isn’t a sign you weren’t good enough. Regular hands-on practice keeps the equipment familiar, so it doesn’t feel foreign when you need it.

Ready to Book? Your HLTAID015 Next Steps

You’ve got the rule now, and it’s a lot simpler than most course pages make it look. There’s one unit-level prerequisite and a bit of provider admin, and then you’re in.

Start with your HLTAID011. Before anything else, check the issue date on your certificate or in your USI transcript.

If your HLTAID011 has lapsed, book that course first. That’s the one requirement nobody can work around, and once it’s done the rest is straightforward.

If it’s current, you’re ready. Book HLTAID015 in Brisbane, pick a date and spend the day on the equipment. Weekend dates suit anyone on a FIFO break or a busy event roster.

Not sure your certificate counts? Give us a call before you book. Finding out on the phone is a lot better than finding out on the day.

If you’re organising training for a whole team, request onsite training so your ERT trains on its own equipment and the facility stays covered.

If you’ve got mixed expiry dates across your ERT, grab the tracker as well and keep every ticket in one sheet.

Sort it out once. Then the next time the radio goes, your attention is on the oxygen and airways, not the paperwork.

HLTAID015 Prerequisites FAQ

Q.Can I do HLTAID015 without HLTAID011?

No. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the only prerequisite unit written into HLTAID015, so you need it before you're assessed as competent, and no provider can waive it.

Q.Can I complete HLTAID011 and HLTAID015 together?

Ask your provider whether they run a combined pathway, but either way you need HLTAID011 completed before you're assessed in HLTAID015.

Q.Do I need healthcare or paramedic experience?

No. It isn't a unit prerequisite, and plenty of ERT members, even first aiders and FIFO workers, do this course without a clinical background.

Q.Does HLTAID014 count as the prerequisite?

HLTAID014 is a separate unit, so check your USI transcript for a current HLTAID011 before you book HLTAID015.

Q.Will my old HLTAID003 certificate get me in?

No. Training.gov.au lists HLTAID011 as not equivalent to HLTAID003, so plan to complete HLTAID011 first.

Q.I hold HLTAID007. Is HLTAID015 just a renewal?

No. HLTAID015 isn't equivalent to HLTAID007, so treat it as a new enrolment and confirm your HLTAID011 is current.

Q.Do I need a USI?

Yes. You need a USI for any nationally recognised training, and if you've done HLTAID011 before you'll already have one.
