First Aid Alive Trainer and Assessor Currency and Professional Development

Purpose

First Aid Alive is committed to ensuring that all trainers and assessors maintain current vocational competency, industry currency, and ongoing professional development in accordance with the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2025.

This policy outlines the requirements and processes for maintaining trainer and assessor capability to ensure high-quality, compliant, and industry-relevant training and assessment services.

Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Trainers
  • Assessors
  • Contractor trainers and assessors
  • Any personnel involved in the delivery or assessment of nationally recognised training

Policy Statement

First Aid Alive will ensure that all trainers and assessors:

  • Hold the required training and assessment credentials
  • Maintain vocational competency relevant to the training being delivered
  • Maintain current industry skills and knowledge (industry currency)
  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to vocational training, learning, and assessment
  • Deliver training and assessment that reflects current industry practices and regulatory requirements

Vocational Competency

Trainers and assessors must demonstrate vocational competency at least to the level being delivered and assessed.

Evidence of vocational competency may include:

  • Qualifications and Statements of Attainment
  • Relevant work experience
  • Industry licences or registrations
  • Current employment within the industry
  • Evidence of skills application in the workplace

Industry Currency

Trainers and assessors are required to maintain current industry skills, knowledge, and practices relevant to the training products they deliver.

Industry currency activities may include:

  • Attending industry conferences, workshops, or seminars
  • Participating in workplace activities or industry engagement
  • Membership with professional or industry organisations
  • Reviewing industry updates, legislation, and best practice guidelines
  • Maintaining clinical or workplace practice relevant to the industry

Professional Development

Trainers and assessors must participate in ongoing professional development related to:

  • Vocational education and training (VET)
  • Competency-based training and assessment
  • Training package updates
  • Industry changes and emerging practices
  • Digital learning and assessment tools
  • Learner support and inclusive practices

 

Examples of professional development activities may include:

    • Formal training or qualifications
    • Webinars and workshops
    • Conferences and networking events
    • Internal moderation and validation activities
    • Self-directed learning and research

Evidence Requirements

Trainers and assessors are required to maintain evidence of currency and professional development activities.

Evidence may include:

  • Certificates of attendance or completion
  • Membership records
  • Industry engagement logs
  • Professional development plans
  • Meeting minutes or validation records
  • Reflective practice notes

Monitoring and Review

First Aid Alive will:

  • Maintain trainer and assessor records
  • Monitor currency and professional development activities regularly
  • Review trainer files to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Support trainers and assessors in identifying professional development needs

Responsibilities

Management

Management is responsible for:

  • Ensuring trainers and assessors meet regulatory requirements
  • Monitoring compliance with this policy
  • Supporting ongoing professional development opportunities

 

Trainers and Assessors

Trainers and assessors are responsible for:

  • Maintaining vocational competency and industry currency
  • Participating in ongoing professional development
  • Providing evidence of qualifications, currency, and professional development activities
  • Ensuring training and assessment practices remain current and compliant

Non-Compliance

Failure to maintain required competency, industry currency, or professional development may result in:

  • Restriction from training or assessment delivery
  • Additional professional development requirements
  • Review of trainer/assessor suitability

Review

This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, and organisational requirements.
